Dear
Armonía,
With
a very heavy heart we share with you that Nola, our beloved 41-year-old
northern white rhino, passed away this morning from age-related health
issues. As they have for decades, her animal care family stayed by her
side.
Nola
was an iconic animal, not only at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park but
also worldwide. Northern white rhinos are critically endangered, and she
was one of only four left on the entire planet. Over the past 26 years,
millions of people around the globe have learned about Nola and the
plight of rhinos in the wild through visits to the Safari Park, hundreds
of news stories, and countless social media posts. Her sweet and gentle
personality made her very special to all of us who had the true honor
and privilege to care for her. She will be deeply missed.
Nola's
passing leaves 3 northern white rhinos on Earth. San Diego Zoo Global
is dedicated to bringing species back from the brink of extinction. As
leaders in rhino conservation, we are building a one-of-a-kind Rhino
Rescue Center at
the Safari Park dedicated to saving Nola's species from disappearing
forever. Our
six new southern white rhino residents that arrived a few weeks ago will
be a part of these cutting-edge efforts as we develop the techniques
for a surrogacy program to save the northern white rhino. To learn more
about the Rhino Rescue Center, please visit sandiegozoo.org/rhinos.
Nola
leaves a legacy that we will carry forward as we lead the fight to end
extinction. Please feel free to share your condolences, favorite photos,
and thoughts on Facebook using #Nola4Ever.
On
behalf of all of us at San Diego Zoo Global, thank you for your
continued support as we work together to save these gentle giants.
Yours in conservation,
Randy Rieches Henshaw Curator of Mammals San Diego Zoo Safari Park
